Self Build vs Shop Build vs Pre-Built

I've always thought self building a PC was a easy way to save some money.

These days there are plenty of places that will build custom systems for you.

Plus there's the usual "pre built" packages available.

Is there still much of a saving to be had by doing things yourself? Does the custom vs pre-built option come at much of a premium?

@sastusbulbas - Interesting, thanks! I have always assumed this was the case, but glad to hear it's still a valid assumption.

@jigger - This seems at odds with what's been said by others. Are these examples guilty of the weak specific components that others have raised?
