We're going to tile our porch, all of 0.7m^2 and the current floor is pretty ratty looking concrete. As the tiles going down aren't cheap, I'd like to make sure the surface to tile on is as level as possible to get a really good finish - hence the though of self leveling compound. Having never used it before I was wondering if anyone had advice or recommendations.

Thanks in advance

Although it's self levelling, you still need to spread it out and get it as level as you possibly can yourself too.

Also, follow the mixing instructions to the letter, when mixing with water, adding too much or too little water can really affect how well it works.

I did mine yesterday for the first time with the Mapei 25kg bag from screwfix.

I just poured and walked away. It worked perfectly and was touch dry in an hour and you could walk on it in 4 hours.

Mine was about 0.7m2 also and i mixed the whole bag. I put it on 20mm thick and probably wasted about 5kg of product.

Would 2mm be enough to level out an uneven surface though? Surely about 10-20mm would be needed to even things out?

[Disclaimer - I have never used the stuff so have no idea)

Just had a quick read on that mapei brand,I am surprised that you can use it so thick!
You learn something new every day on OCUK :D

My builder just covered 26m2 with self leveling compound. Looks like it's worked really well and is incredibly smooth. Left it to dry overnight and it's fine to walk on now. We'll be using it for porcelain tiling.
