Do the Western Digital Passport's work OK on the MacBook? Is it possible to encrypt all the data on so that if the drive is stolen the information is rendered irritreivable?

You could just use disk utility and encrypt the data you use in a secure folder.

That way, if it's stolen the data will be useless to someone who doesn't know your password.

Can't see why the Passport wouldn't work on the Mac.. it runs the same hardware as a PC, FireWire and USB standards etc etc.

I use a passport with my powerbook, works fine, although the bundled encryption stuff from WD is windows only, so just do as EVH said.

Some of these self powered hdd's require 2 usb ports sometimes to supply power.

Aye.

Not sure about WD's but my MacBook's original 80GB HDD running in an IceBox needs 2 USB to power; funny enough, I bought a 160GB Hitachi and that runs easily with a single USB, even used it to boot into OS via IceBox enclosure...

I have a 7K200 7200RPM 200Gb drive in a Akasa Integral P2 2.5" enclosure running via eSATA on just one USB port :)

Can't get the two power things into two ports anyway lol (USB ports are on opposite sides of the MBP)
