Do you think people are becoming more selfish.

I have noticed more recently that people are so wrapped up with their own lifes that they are becoming more oblivous to their surroundings. Take cars for example, once people are inside then nothing and no one is more important than them getting from a to b. People on the trains will "scrum" through the doors to get a seat. . .

I opened the door for a woman at work this morning and she went past without even a whisper.. To busy listening to her iPod. Completely in another world..

Where has all the respect and politness gone? Does nobody say please and thank you anymore.

Has social deprevation taken over that we are no longer able to communicate or act in a civil manner.

*Holds door to GD open for fellow OCUKers* Good morning to you all' :)

Why thank you and good morning. Cucumber sandwich? :p

What really niffed me off was going christmas shopping last Saturday. It was like the coming of doomsday. There I was looking at something in wollies and some woman snatched it out of my hands as I was putting it back. I didn't maon or get anoyoed, they aren't worth it. I just went home. Couldn't be bothered with the maddness of it all.

I don't think that society in general (whatever that means) is getting much less polite - certainly not enough to notice over the course of 2-3 years. People just notice it more when they get older and grumpier. People almost always say thanks to me when I hold a door open for them.

I don't think i'm a grumpy (can't disagree with the old bit though :p ). On the contrary, I think I'm quite chilled and layed back at times and because so, I'm more aware of what's going on around. If you take a step back from it all, you will see what I mean :)

We're just so busy with our lives we become selfish.

Have all the the gadgets and time/labour saving devices actually made us better people. No, I don't think they have.. All it means is that we have more time to sits staring at a box.

Society it seems finds every more complicated ways for us to communicate WITHOUT actually communicating (ie ways for us to get what we want as efficiently as possible without having to interact with a real person).

#claps hands at this chap#

That is a very interesting point. As I said, techonology hasn't made us better people. We are loosing our social and behaviour skills because of the lack of direct communication with other people. Text is a prime example of this.

Interesting stuff, but a simple courteous "thank you" really isn't that difficult to initiate and carry out.

It is for people who have lost all social skills becuase of social deprevation. As in the Surfers post, for example.
