Hi all,

I am looking to downsize my car due to a buying a new house. I am trying to decide the best way of doing this as I have never sold a car before (only traded in). Can you estimate the fees for the sale of a £8.5k car (focus st) on autotrader/ pistonheads/ anywhere else you recommend. The garage I have seen a car to buy have offered to take it in any pay me back the difference between the new car and the old one but I want to be able to compare it to other options.

Thanks

Autotrader and eBay are probably the best value given the audience your advert would reach.

Are you so lazy that you can't google autotrader or ebay fees?

Think a classified on eBay is £30 (30 day)
Auction would be 10% plus paypal fees (3.2% +20p iirc)
Gumtree is free last time I looked
Pistonheads I think is around a tenner.
Wutotrader 2 week 36.95, 3 week 45.95, 6 week 56.95
Preloved is free
I was unable to locate a cost for motors.co.uk

What were you offerred as trade in?
What are they currently selling for (as close to yours as possible)

Ebay (classified ad at £15) and Gumtree (first 2 car ads per 12 months are free, then I think you have to pay) are the best. Pistonheads used to be good. Then they made it too complicated, and started charging to advertise. It went downhill from there I think. Very rarely look on there now.

Owners clubs are a good place too. Usually free (although some do require membership before being able to advertise).
