Evening all,

So I've agreed a sale on the Aygo, seller has paid 25% deposit and all good.

It's for his daughter, she has a private plate ready to go on.

Im just wondering what's the best way to go about this.

I have seen online I can now do the V5 online and then just pass the slip to the new seller.

Question is does this then instantly create a new V5 document number of which can be used on DVLA's online site to transfer the reg?

Looking online the change of registration is instant, are we best going the reg plate first then V5 or can I do the V5 now, allow to process then say on Friday the seller can do the online registration plate change?

I'm maybe just over thinking it, but the guy wants to suprise his daughter and I'm trying to help out as much as possible!

Any help appreciated!

Just transferred it online using the DVLA site when he pays the money and collects it. They will post you confirmation of transfer and send him the new V5. This has the added benefit of recording the time it was transferred in case he gets a speeding ticket on the drive home. Then let him worry about a plate transfer once he is the keeper. It's his issue to sort out. Don't get involved in it. Just transfer ownership to him with the current plate.

Once the registered keeper has been changed online could we use the V5 document number I have or will that be instantly void?

I am sorry but I don't know. This is something for the new owner to look into and sort out. As a pure guess I assume it will be void.

The owner of the private plate needs to do the transfer and it costs £80.
he can do this as soon as he has a v5.
New V5 will arrive in 3-5 days but be aware - the dvla are about to go on strike.

I’d sell the car and give home the problem to sort out.

I've just been reading up on this.

It seems the quickest way is to do everything online.

I'm therefore not doing it prematurely and assuming no strikes could potentially have the plate on the vehicle by next Friday.

This is the only way it can be done , he has to provide a certificate of entitlement and transfer the reg over himself

You sell the car to him, he pays the monies

he then assigns the private plate to the car (free) and instant straight away online, using the v5c and the priv plate voucher code.

it’s only £80 taking a priv plate off a car onto retention then it’s £80 every ten years unless you assign it to a car

Void. The new person will have to wait for his new V5 to arrive. Its a massive pain in the backside.

Everything online except for one bit.

You have to wait for the new V5 before he can transfer the plate over. I personally wouldn't get involved with trying to transfer the plate over before or as part of the sale as you'll have to update your insurance and you're also reliant on the DVLA and things can go wrong.

So sell him the car as is, when he then gets the V5 in his name he can then go online and transfer the private reg over onto the car.

Thanks all.

I've slowed the whole thing down. I also hadn't realised the tax is also cancelled as soon as the online V5 is completed.

I need the car this week I advised I'll sort it on Friday!

What do you need to "sort"? When the buyer turns up to collect the car then transfer the V5 online at that point. Just do it on your phone in front of the buyer. Don't do it before or after. Just do it as you hand over the keys to them. That's how I've done it for the last couple of cars.

As someone who has been waiting for about 8 weeks for a V5 at this stage (DVLA have acknowledged they are processing it and should have issued it on the 25th of this month, at the latest), just do it online when he collects. He ‘should’ get the new V5 within a few days and can then allocate the new plate once he gets it in minutes. All previous V5’s become instantly void, though he can tax it or apply for a replacement V5 using the new keepers slip.

@GingG I'd not be completing the New owner V5 until you've been paid in full mate.

When the bloke turns up go online and fill in: https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle
Don't forget to get a receipt of some form knocked up with the time and date on signed by you both.
And don't forget to tell your insurers instantly - dont want him driving home, crashing and using your insurance
Once this has been done he then needs to tax it, again online.

Once he's got the new V5 he can do w/e he wants wiht the reg

Sadly at the moment it can take weeks to get a new V5. not your problem though, he will just have to wait before putting his cherished plate on

Reading this thread again I am worried you are transferring the V5 over to him after only receiving 25% deposit. Hopefully I have misunderstood this. But if that is indeed the case DO NOT DO THIS. Only transfer it after you have received full payment in a non-reversible way such as bank transfer (not paypal).

It also occurred to me that he could be using the daughters gift / private plate as a pressure point to persuade you to do it quickly.

As I said, I hope I have got this wrong. But please do not transfer thr V5 until you have all of the money in your account.

The new buyer needs to sort out insurance and tax before he take the car away.
I don’t see how he could claim on the sellers insurance so the seller changing insurance is not so critical imho.

Just took plates off a car last week via the online process. V5 arrived 3 days later. Retention cert 5 days later.
