Quick question for you all.
Lets say that you sell a car towards the end of the month and both parties use the old fashioned "posting of slips" to register the selling / acquiring of the vehicle.

6 months tax was purchased for the vehicle that started on 1st April. Once you sell the car, this triggers a refund on any unused complete months of tax. So, with the vehicle being sold at the end of April, you'd expect to see a refund of 5 months tax.
DVLA are as busy as ever. You put the sold on date correctly for the end of April, however, they don't get around to processing it on their computer systems until the first week in May.
I assume you'd still get a refund of 5 months tax - it may well not have been updated until May, however the sell date was still April.
Or, are DVLA not happy enough with "double bubble" tax on cars when they change hands mid-month and will say it's only a tax refund on unused months based on when they update their systems?

Cheers.

I don't see what grounds they would have to try and process a refund with an extra month less (i.e. 4 months instead of 5) on the basis of 'we didn't get round to processing it for a few days extra, so you owe us another month' rather than the date specified for the change of ownership.

edit - for clarity...

You always lose a month it does not get processed instantly! Do it online tell them you have sold it to claim the rebate...I did this recently on my Lotus Emira got £450 back within a few days very efficient service!

Full months it mentions it here!

That's interesting:

"The refund is calculated from the date DVLA gets your information."

In that case, looks like I was wrong.

If you sold your car on the 28th April but they don't get your paperwork until say the 2nd of May, looks like you owe them for May as well.

The lesson here - don't use the paper system near the end of the month, you'll get bummed for an entire extra month for nothing.

Wow - thanks for finding that.
I guess you really would end up in an uphill struggle - proof of when they received it. If it were a fine then there is presumed delivery. But of course the other way around......

Online for everything it is!
