Sup fellas

Drive an old MK5 GTI, cracking little car but it's time for a change.... unfortunately.

Due to change of circumstances I now need something more economical and maybe a little larger. (baby, new job with longer commute), plus the road tax is stupid!

Seeing as I struggle to get 30mpg most days i want something that would fetch 45mpg+ easily plus not be a total slouch. I quite like the look of newer petrol engines with turbos i.e. 1.2 or 1.4 tsi/ecoboost models.

I can fetch about £6k for my GTI so looking at like for like in terms of price.

Tough one for the budget from what I've seen, maybe I'm too picky.

Anyone recommend anything ?

I think you will struggle to get 45+ mpg even from the small ecoboost engines. I used to get about 38 from my Fiesta ST and that is a pretty light car.

You have to compromise somewhere. It's either high performance and worse economy, or a diesel :P

Not really a fan, don't like the look of them.

skoda octavia / superb?

I did consider a VRS before my GTI, I'll take a look

Mrs drives a 1.0 tsi, easy gets 50+ mpg

DO you really need to change the car? It's doubtful that economy savings would be that great after taking into account the cost of changing cars and potentially moving into a car that need unknown work on it.

I've always had a 5 door Golf GTI or similar in my life as it's the perfect all round car. I brought two kids up in a mk6 just fine.

However if it's a 3 door then I can see why you'd need to change it...

I have easily seen off 45mpg in a Fiesta ST 1.6 Ecoboost, it comes down to how you drive it, and on what roads. For mixed driving and not too many hills, it is fairly straightforward.

Rogue suggestion - Mk6 1.4 TSI GT? Possible reliability question marks depending on who you talk to (although mine didn't miss a beat between 20-50,000 miles), otherwise cracking car/engine (imo) that hits 60 in 8 seconds and handles ok. Should get 40+mpg (I did) and more on longer runs.

Example here

That's fair enough, they aren't for everyone. On paper however they are a great car.

As mentioned above a VRS CR should be doable at this budget, but depends on the kind of mileage you want.

I've been thinking this too.

I do like my car, solid as a rock and never let me down, low mileage considering its age too.

If I'm conscious about it I can hit 35-37mpg (did test run to new place of work) so I guess getting 40-45 MPG won't be that significant in terms of savings

hmm

Stick with a known quantity if you can.
