Selling/Trading I3 for I5

Hi, this is my time posting a question so go easy on me! 6 months ago I build up a PC thinking I would primarily be working remotely on it and connecting to a big Dev rig in my office, with that in mind I didn't need a overly powerful CPU so chose an I3 3240.

Now I'm starting to get more into my gaming on the PC and notice that the I5 is getting some good write ups as the sweet spot between price and performance, while my I3 is starting to struggle with big multi player games. So I would like to sell/trade my i3 for an i5. Is this at all possible if so where, or will no one touch a second hand cpu?

People will buy 2nd hand cpus but why would anyone trade a more powerful i5 for i3? It;s more likely you'll be stuck with it but you should be able to buy an an i5 and drop it into the system.

When I say trade it would be trade plus cash, I was thinking that maybe a local shop that does pc builds/repairs might part exchange it for an i5, cause they could then use it in one of their builds for a different customer.

I'm 99% sure the i5 will work with my current system, it is just that I don't want to lose the money I spent on the i3. If I just buy a replacement i5 then it would effectively cost me£250+ cause of the redundant i3 and wouldn't be worth it.

I have never heard of shops doing part exchange on pc hardware. Your best bet is to pick up a second hand i5 and then sell your i3 either to a friend or on a auction site. That would be the cheapest and best way of trading up.

Thanks for that, it will save me wasting the shops time. I'll keep one eye on ebay then and see if I can get a good price on a i5 or even a i7 :D

@Nuclear Fusion Just to be clear I wasn't trying to sell or trade here. I was just seeking advice if there was a general market for used cpu's as I had never looked into this before. Any of my old systems where so far out of date the components where virtually worthless so I had never tried selling them anywhere. Now I'm looking to upgrade a current generation CPU and was wondering if there would be any demand on the likes of ebay etc, that could help me recoup some of the cost of the planned upgrade.

You should get something for the i3 on the bay and put it towards the £180 for the 3570K. Are you going to be overclocking?

Yeah I think I will try a listing on ebay. As for over clocking I'm not sure yet as I've never had any experience of it before, but I hear that the i5 processors respond quite well. I would really need to get a new case and PSU first before any going any further as both are absolute entry level and I'd be concerend about the high temps due to the lack of airflow/space.

Okey dokey, sorry I misinterpreted and thought you were trying to trade it on here :)

As others have said, you'd be hard pushed to do a direct trade with someone, as there are few people willing to downgrade their i5 to an i3 for a relatively small amount of money (after postage etc.). Your best bet would be to sell it independently and then source an i5 either new or second hand. It might be worth waiting for Haswell to drop the prices of IB/SB i5's when people upgrade. Haswell i3's won't be released straight away, so their second hand price won't be affected as much.

No worries, selling my i3 to fund an upgrade is definitely the way I'm going to go about this now. Cheers.

If you get 1,000 posts and a member for 6 months then I believe there is a members market on here for future second hand stuff.

However, a popular auction site would be the best way to offload the i3
