With three young children and an increasing work load I am toying with selling all my canon gear and buying a compact, either the G12 or S100.

Has anyone done so and have you regretted it, if so why?

It's expensive to replace, why not keep it and keep it charged in quick bag with a all rounder lens on? To record your Kids and life in general. I've got mine setup so so I can video my little 'un and life.

Maybe sell one or two of your big lenses (if any) but again it might cost you in the long run, so why not store it for a time when they are bigger, and might pick it up themselves?

Still got our compact, but it's still sat in it's bag from god knows when, software is too "friendly" I.e. it does what it thinks what I want to do, rather than what I actually want it to do. Also functions on the compact are always going to be a basic / cut down compared to the DLSR.

2 Cents of course and standard T&C's on opinions apply :)

I went from a 450D with a variety of lenses to a Canon S95. Loved the size, control and convenience of it slipping in my pocket. However missed a decent focal length. Made the mistake of getting a Sony HX9v and replaced that with a Fuji X10 excellent camera. Not as small as the S95 or S100 but superb lens, customer service and control and it can be had refurbished for under £300.

The only thing i miss with a DSLR is a viewfinder with all the camera info in and of course the X10 has small zoom. However, the minimal noise and lens makes up for it (and I can crop)

I got rid of all my gear, which also inc M4/3 gear aswell as i didn't have the time anymore, recently missing having a camera with me sometimes i bought the fuji X10, just last weekend, do i regret it?.... not one bit.

Im finding the Fuji X10 to be a brilliant little camera & the images considering the size of the sensor are superb, plus there is no need to shoot RAW neither as the Jpeg's from this camera are the best I've seen for a long while.

One more intresting point about the X10 when shooting Jpeg, is best to leave it in P & let the camera mostly decide, rather than shoot in AP ect.
