I think the Thunder Burts are supposed to be a better choice than Furious Freds? Supposedly more grip and less rolling resistance.

Yep. I would choose Thunder Burts over Furious Freds but they still might not be the best choice for you. If you want semi-slicks to use your MTB on the road, go with exist's suggestion of narrow cyclocross tyres. If you just want MTB tyres which roll better on hardpack gravel/forrest tracks/dirt roads/etc, then I would go for the Thunder Burts.
