Providing it's <12 months why don't people return to the store?

Thats what I did on my first xbox and got a full refund (they also refunded me on a game I didn't even give back :O).

Unless your 1 year warrenty is out and MS is the only option for a 3rlod then i would rather get a new console or a refund that SAME day/hour from the place you bought it.
That sounds great, but the problem is that my 1yr warrenty ran out tonight. When i called MS they said that i was lucky as i only just called in time to get the repair for free. I guess i could try the store, but then i have no reciept or original box to prove it.....

If you paid by a card you can get a statement from your bank and use that as 'proof of purchase'. No box, maybe use someone elses or they might let you send back without one. Don't expect a money refund, vouchers or a replacement.
Perhaps in future to any buying a 360 is to look after your recepts, even if it means folding it up and hiding it behind the hdd or faceplate.

You don't need a receipt for the Xbox to be repaired, MS know exactly when it was purchased, the serial number is logged on their database on the day it was paid for....they don't care who owns it 
You can register it on xbox.com and as if by magic, when you type in your serial number it will come up with the standard warranty expiry date.

Yeah i know that i don't need one for sending it back to MS, just that Tony said that i could exchange in the store? I did not realise that you could do this, when the machine is coming up to a year old?
So if i took it in with some kind of proof of purchase, they would exchange?

Well i was always under the assumption that the first years warranty on anything was with the store.....i'm sure if i'm wrong someone will point it out.
But it's gotta be worth trying before you send it away, you may get a super helpful sales assistant........errrr maybe not
