Currently i own a domain with 123reg, and i dont pay for anything other then the domain name, so i dont have an email account with them, i only have the domain set to redirect emails to my google mail account.

Now, whenever i recieve an email sent to my domain, and reply to it, it obviously replys with my gmail address, which hasnt realy been a problem at all, since the main important stuff i register to i use my gmail address anyway, but recently i have been wondering if there is a better way to do it. Is there any way i can get gmail to send outbound emails using my domain name? or is that not possible unless i buy a email service from 123reg or host my own mail server?

Can you not add your domain email address within gmail and set this as the default to use? Have a look under settings, account, send mail as - add another email address.

you would need to create an mx record to point at an email server, be it exchange or whatever gmail requires you to do i think.

If you use Gmail you can just add the email address under "Send Mail As," it doesn't need to be a proper account, just a forward works. If you still want proper accounts then Google Apps is the way to go but you don't really need to do it.
