Just renewed my driving licence online and at the end it said I had to cut the old licence card in half and send it back to DVLA. Just wondering if this is necessary? Will i get into trouble if I don't? I would shred it otherwise.

Cheers

Chuck in a drawer and forget about it.

I still have my brown HGV booklet I was supposed to send in 20 odd years ago.

Yup, I've moved three times and added an HGV entitlement in the last 3 years, so now have a little collection.

Also now have not one but three cards in my wallet.

^ I am a grass.

I won't bother than, those bandits from DVLA take enough money, but if I get raided I will remember this thread.

Cheers for the heads up.

I just tell them I have lost it so I have eveidence of my entitlements if they screw it up. Not that I expect them to take any notice as they never make mistakes. Yeah right!!

My old ones still in my wallet, if they ever say anything "I sent it Royal Mail must have lost it"

Related question: I renewed my licence just under two weeks ago, they said it would be with me in two weeks max (which would be tomorrow).

So far it hasn't arrived. But, I'm off on holiday next Friday and need a licence for the hire car.

I still have my old licence which states is valid until the end of August. Reckon it would be a problem when picking up the hire car? I don't know if they'll check it online or anything or just check that I have the photocard at the desk.

You'll need to do your online licence check thing for a hire car won't you? Not sure if it would show up on that, if it's not mentioned on there then I can't see why it wouldn't be fine.

Ahh yes. Forgot about the procedure for that now that paper licences are gone.

As a last resort, my girlfriend can always drive instead. I just quite enjoy driving abroad.

I doubt they'll care, they just check name and address. I'm sure I've accidentily taken my old provisional license before with no issues.

I never bothered. It's come in handy when I've had stuff delivered to my parents' address and they weren't in to receive it and I've had to waddle down to the local post office to retrieve it.

Ditto on the never bothering.

I've moved several times and they ask for the old one each time which I've never sent. They haven't ever chased me.

It can be quite handy to have the last one as a backup in case you lose your current. Not sure if that would be worse than telling the police you'd lost your current one, but I don't like not having ID with me and that's the only thing I carry.

Checked on the Avis website and they are just saying bring a photocard - they're not bothering with the DVLA code thing. So hopefully wont be a problem.

If you're driving abroad there's next to no chance they'll do a proper dvla check.

When I go away they don't even look at my license if hiring under preferred/corporate

That's good to hear. I changed address about 6 months ago and since then I have been trying to make time to stick mine in an envelope to send it back :p

Well mine came pretty quick, within a week.

Word of warning though its illegal or something to have your old or carry your old licence and you can get fined.
