I bought these a few years back and sold them straight away, they gave me a headache and sounded really harsh at high volume!

Are they known for a harsh treble?..... I'm guessing that was the cause

nope and it takes 2 weeks of regular use for your ears to adjust.

hd700 is the one that is bright

If you are thinking of going 800 you might as well get the "s" model

Also depends on the amp that you drive them with. I'd have thought that a good valve based unit would be a good match.

Yeah IIRC the S model supposedly is a little "richer"/very slightly warm sounding (not tried that variant though) - the original model has quite a clear sound - I'd say the treble is quite revealing which might come across as bright.

Tube with its rolled off treble would probably tame any issues someone might have with the treble as Mr Sukebe suggested.
