Time to update my headphones. Am thinking of getting the hd 660s but thought I'd check out your advice first. Predominantly for gaming with 7.1 surround will these be overkill and if so what's an alternative. Thanks in advance

HD660s aren't great for gaming. Sennheiser's 58x, 650, and 660 don't use angled drivers like the 5xx series do, so soundstage suffers a LOT (how spacious everything is) and are not as good for gaming as a result.

I have tried fidellio x2, dt 1990 pro( these sound amazing but don't let a lot of air in and your ears hurt after a while), hd 660s(really uncomfortable clamp for me personally) but I still prefer my hd 599's which I've had for years and can wear for hours. Super comfortable and sound really good too.

I think the dt 990s are meant to be good too which I might give a try

I believe 660S are better for gaming than the 600/650. I like my 600s for single player but for faster paced/multiplayer the 600 series are a bit lacking - positional audio isn't as resolved as gaming focussed headset and they have a mellow lingering kind of characteristic which is good for music but again tends to be a poor fit for gaming audio.

For the 660 at least you can just pull the headphone apart slightly to bend the metal and loosen up the clamp force.

But yes, the 599 is fantastic for gaming and often goes on sale for under 100.

If usage is mainly for gaming just grab a set of Sennheiser PC37x. They are fantastic for positional audio, not to bad with music either to be fair. There also light and dont make your ears cook.

The only reason I sold mine was becuase music was main use, and for that I prefer my HD600s.
