Picked up the new AC/DC album on vinyl this weekend.... my hd800 are my main headphones and I rarely use my hd650 now. But I keep them plugged into to keep them warmed up.

The hd800 are stock leads, my hd650 are balanced. On 2 listens to this album I just thought something was lacking. Went to my hd650.... the bass kicks in BIG style :D

Edit.... although the detail on the hd800 kicks it’s arse

Once you hit HD600 or akg k702 all other headphones above them aren't better just different.

I have hd700

Also had hd600, q701, he400 and a bunch of others literally thousands of gear.

My advice would be to have the following in your set and forget about spending more or upgrades

Phillips Fidelio X2 or X3 now?
AKG K702
Sennheiser HD 6XX

You cover all the bases bar closed which dt770 covers well enough.

I've started selling up my collection as I've realised that the higher end stuff isn't actually better just different or you get a tiny bit more clarity but it cost 4-6 times as much which isn't worth it.

It's not as if music producers even use £800 headphones. I know folk in the music industry and they literally use £50-£100 headphones.

You could add a pair of electrostatics such as the Stax to the above list, but again, I’d argue that they’re a matter of taste. I compared a set to HD600s driven by a decent amp, and preferred the HDs.
