I have a 92mm NF-B9 redux-1600 PWM fan in my computer as an added exhaust at the bottom, it keeps the temps from slowly rising which is good, but only at full speed.

I used to use it and then stopped for a while, turned it on the other day (it is attached to the Noctua speed controller) but it seems to be whining now which I never noticed before, I have only had it a couple of months and have hardly used it.

I took it out and ramped it up to full speed and it sounds like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31ImjyNtt9E (1:48) inside the computer I don't hear this but I do hear a higher frequency whine :(.

I may have a look to see what Arctic has as I also have a larger primary exhaust fan by Arctic which is silent compared to A Noctua one of the same size despite being placed against the honeycomb mesh.

I've got rid of a whole case of fans after after finding out they had a high tone which bothered me.

It's any combo of the fan blade noise as it rips through the air, the fan bearings and any motor noise. The noise will always be louder with higher rpm.

Also having fans against a mesh can be quieter or louder. You can't really know if it's going to bother you until you hear it in your case.

I sold on my fans to someone else who was apparently fine with them.

What have you got cooling your case now then? I might just keep ordering ones until the right one turns up.

I had a look around on youtube and other sites and it seeme that the one I have is the quietest for that size of fan pushing that much air, looks like I'll have to just get over it and one day get a case where I can use more than just the one 120MM (actual silent apart from wind noise) Arctic fan.

I have two of these Notcuas attached to my GPU and they also make the same noise although not as high pitched, I think the Noctua speed controller either ramps the Noctua exhaust fan faster than it should go or the ones on the GPU are not able to go at full speed.

It's just weird how I never noticed it before.

Arctic are good fans at a very low price. But if you want a quiet system you will probably be better served with a case that uses 120mm or 140mm fans instead of 92mm fans.

Agreed doyll, 140mm FTW! :) I will one day in the future but to be honest I will also end up putting the computer in the hallway or a separate room with a bunch of extended cables for complete silence :) No joke!
