So I bought, a PC from OCUK in November

On arrival When the PSU got hot (Corsair HX850 Gold) the Fan kicked in like it should.
& It the fan hit the mesh on top and caused a Van Engine like sound.

OCUK instantly replaced it & this one was slighty whistling but thought nothing of it. Now when the FAN kicks in it started to sound like the first...

Should i send the 2nd back? Do you think i could change brand?
This Model seems to bugged for noises.

my HX1000 (which is 3 years old) it slient in the same PC which fan is constantly on.

seems bad for A £140 psu!

Are you mounting the PSU fan down? I ask because the new Corsair PSU's have an 'intelligent' or lets call it an idiotic feature where the fans stay turned off and only kick it at a certain temperature. When they do kick in, they start up at 100% speed which is the cause of the noise you are getting with the replacement. Whichever idiot came up with that idea should be fired.

But the fan should start from low RPM on corsair PSu
The box has a so cold diagram of fan RPM on load and there is a smooth transit
I had a corsair PSu and it scared the life out of me, it did that only once in the 4 hours i had it

I don't suppose anyone does, those are support forums and you will only find pre-sale queries and post-sale issues.

Out of curiosity I skipped back to page 51 then 101 of the forums and found

Page 1 (up to recent Dec 2012) has 24 posts out of 40 about fan noise problems.
Page 51 (February 2011) has 12 posts out of 40 about fan noise problems.
Page 101 (June 2009) has 3 posts out of 40 about fan noise problems.

Don't take this as a method of sampling because it's not. I just plucked up two random pages and found one to be from 2011 and the second, 2009.

A Corsair 520W HX Series PSU I brought back in 2007 is still running fine and it's fan is constantly running albeit quiet. To me it seems like Corsair have either tried cutting corners or screwed up testing with their temperature controlled fans. Whichever it is, I don't have much faith in their PSU's anymore.

well we have well over 300 HX600's at work there all ok.

Only 2 died in 3 years

but this model is apparently ousourced to flextronics & corsair thought that the FAN would be better going from 0 - 2000RPM every so often than slowly increasing from 0-500 etc...

so much for slient PSU

i will be RMAing it. Just need to find a 850W+ for my PSU

(i want little overhead for future Xfire+ Expansion cards)

The HX850w is a OEM Channel Well PSU made for Corsair but the past few years they have been varying OEM's between Channel Well, Flextronics & Seasonic for their different ranges.

It's a shame because their Seasonic HX range which they first launched went down like a house on fire. God knows what happened in between all those superb reviews they were getting back then new temperature controlled fan mode PSU's.

Take a look at the links below to find which OEM's PSU manufacturers use for their PSU's

Edit

I've found this for you but its currently showing OOS albeit some top notch reviews online. According to the last link above, the XFX XXX Series is in the list of Tier 1 PSU's which have "The Most Powerful And Stable Components On The Market." Think I might go for this myself, was originally set on the Corsair AX750

YOUR BASKET
1 x XFX 850W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £94.99
Total : £105.49 (includes shipping : £8.75).

will never buy xfx sorry.

i bought XFX 6600GT years back from OCUK, it broke OCUK confirmed & went to XFX who said it was ok (displayed no video!) Took 2 months of moaning at XFX to get a resolution in the mean while OCUK gave me a 7600GT PNY.
OCUK stopped trading them 3 weeks later. Dont know why they are back.

so.. i know it was a long time ago but, RMA sucks. wont buy xfx again.

or what i could do is get my money back (guess so) & use my HX1000 still it dies & replace later Get OCUK Voucher or whatever
