SEO – Where to start learning?

Hi,

Wanting to get a bit more SEO knowledge under my belt… there is the potential that I’ll be changing jobs in the not too distant future and its clearly something that most web aware companies are putting down on their ‘like to have’ list.

So my question is – How does one go about learning the ways of SEO

I understand what I believe to be the basics:
Clean code
User friendly URLs
Standards compliant (helpful?)

Any books or website suggestions gratefully received.

Whilst we’re on the subject, how to those who work in web fields stay on top of the trends or feed the need for continued learning?

Trends are easy, you only need look around some inspiration sites or the portfolios of your favourite designers.

The continued learning comes in three parts for me.

1. Learning as needed. Some things you'll only ever think to learn or figure out when you need a solution for a specific problem.

2. I sub to the RSS feeds of many many different sites (web design, graphic design and jquery related mostly). The amount of useful information on these sites is great. Twitter is very good for this also.

3. If I see something I really like, I figure out how they did it. Incidentally, this is also what I would do when I was first learning back in 1998 or so.
 
The key with SEO is reading, learning, experimenting, refining, reading some more, experimenting again and repeating that over and over.

Read from as many sources as possible
Gain what you can from those
Implement ideas from those sources, experiment with changing those ideas
Adapt and evolve - what SEO people are telling you about on their blogs today is probably what they were working on a year ago. ;)
 
There are many resources available for you to learn more about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO simply the collection of techniques that enables a website to become the favor of the search engines and optimized the site to have more traffic and page rank. Currently there are more jobs available in SEO, it will bring the great boom in future.
 
You don't kind of buy the 'big book of seo' as it's an area that's always changing. Best subscribe to a few good blogs/sites and google basics of onsite seo for tutorials.

To keep on top of it all, you need to be regularly reading about it and using it .
