Hi,
I made my mum a simple website for a charity she helps run called The Heworth Moor House Trust (link attached). However it has been up almost a year now and doesn't appear anywhere near the first page on a google search. Is there anything I can do to make it appear nearer the top?

Couple of things -

1. Get a good description of your site in the <title> tag. It should be written to tell people what your site is about - not just who it is the site for. Up to about 90 characters though - not too long.
2. Consider a site map.
3. If you have images (not gone past your front page so not sure if you have any), use alt tags to describe these.
4. Content - use keywords in your content. You need to consider carefully what keywords people will search for when they are trying to find you.
5. You're using frames - http://www.hmhtrust.org.uk/ - go there and you don't get any content in the sourcecode. Just stuff about frames. This is likely to be a fairly big issue
6. Use header tags <h1> <h2> etc for titles on your page. Use keywords in titles.

I think the frames could cause you a fairly large problem, actually. I would, personally, get rid of these and move from there.

The fact that your site is buried inside a pointless frame means that it's harder for bots to find the real content. They will get there however, but they wont be rating the content as very worthwhile, so you wont get well ranked.

You need a proper hosting solution, which for this site will cost pennies in fact I'll happily host it for you for free (seeing as it is a registered charity and it isn't going to be very demanding).

So drop the frames, point the nameservers to your actual server, spruce up the markup a little (Brainchylde has covered all the obvious bases) and you will be getting listed properly in no time.

Let me know if you are interested and we can communicate off-forum.
