Seperate screens, different things

I have just got a display port to hdmi cable for my 2008 macbook, I was wondering 2 things.

I have just connected my macbook up to my tv, is there anyway to put the mouse on what the tv displays? It is bringing up a resolution box and looks like its working fine, but cannot for example put the mouse over it.

Secondly, is there anyway to get the tv doing something separate to what my screen displays on the mac? For example, can I watch a film on my tv and browse the web on my macbook?

On your TV do you see exactly the same thing as on your MB? If so, you need to untick mirroring in display preferences.

If you are seeing different deskstops then you can start dragging windows over and use it as extended display.
