Morning all,

Had an unfortunate incident where some kitchen trim has got wet and expanded. I've got the replacement trim - just gone to remove it and cut the new bits and found that the mitred edges are stuck together. Makes sense! But now I'm puzzled by how I remove it nicely.

For this section, I need to remove both pieces:

But for this bit I only need to remove the long section on the right (the other side of the above). I don't want to remove the bit on the left (short bit) because then I need to mastic it back up nicely, and I can't do that.

How do I break the glue joints between these pieces?? I've just tried parting them with a knife with no luck.

Thanks!

Heat.

Try a damp tea towel, an iron and apply gentle heat, which should break the bond.

Be careful to not overdo it though.

Double check for pin nails as well.

It looks like the gap might be big enough to get a stanley blade into it, or if you can get all the say to the back you might be able to get a bit of fishing line or something in and work it to break the glue, but it's going to depend a lot on the type of glue used as some are much better than others, and given you say it's a new build almost anything could have been used (hopefully not something like CT1:p).

What about cutting the trim to the right of the join and then filing/sanding it back to the mitre?

Maybe an easier first attempt to fix it would be to fill the gaps with the same colour product and see how it looks.
