hey guys, just a quick question about air coolers.

basically, i'm still using the amd stock cooler [noisy as hell i know]

any advice on the best brands to look for for aftermarket coolers, i'm after something seriously hefty [on the principle that the bigger the cooler, the quiter it'll have to run for the same heat]

thinking along the lines of a medusa, or an alpenfon k2 mount doom.

I have the NH-D14, which is unarguably the grandaddy of the air cooling world. The same layout as the medusa and the k2 but wirh mariginally better results. You may not like the colour scheme but the performance is bang on.

It is only 159mm tall too, so will fit in nearly every tower. Compare this to the 170mm phanteks and 165mm K2.

Keeps ny 2500k @4.5 under 60C on prime. :)

im preffer performace over looks the noctua is tryed and tested comes with noctua paste in a tube and the fact that years after its release still being recommended shows just how ahead of its time this cooler was and you can get it for about 60 quid :)

Might be a bit pricey but im very pleased with the NZXT Havik 140 cooler I've been using, it is a bit bulky and might cause issues if you have large heat spreaders

The Be Quiet dark rock pro 2 is a great cooler, whisper quiet and keeps my cpu really cool.
only downside is that it's pretty big (168mm) and heavy (1.25kg) but it does a great job.

it wasn't ahead of it's time it was perfect then and still is now.

It's one of the best coolers by far !

it's also a pain in the behind to fit to some boards :o

True but he has a point, if coolers 2 years younger than the d14 are struggling to match its performance it stands to.reason that back in its day it was a true miracle.

I love mine. :)

The Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Thermalright Silver Arrow and Noctua NH-D14 are all comparable in terms of performance.

Personally I think the Phanteks wins on aesthetics, but obviously that's subjective.

I also use a phanteks on my 8350 at 4.7GHz normal usage very quiet almost inaudible, running prime on eight cores, a whooshing sound at full rpm.

Yeah its a nice cooler :)....ive not stepped into the overclocking realm with my cpu yet ...but have been thinking on it....not sure how to even go about it though :)

damnit, who bought the last two d14's?

just gonna have to order and wait for more stock. sadly in my current situation height is a bit of a constraint. gonna have a quick measure to be sure before hitting the order button

Using a k2 here, pretty impressed with it. Getting 76c max on an i5 3570k @4.5ghz, (a much hotter running cpu than amd, or earlier intel i5/7). The stock fans are pretty good, though ive since replaced them with x2 akasa piranhas.

I have 15cm [approx] from mobo to case. done with the specific measurement of a plastic ruler and eyesight.

reckon I might still go for the NH d14, this case is not long destined to be replaced and slicing holes in it isn't a big worry provided I can still somehow wangle the side fan back on
