Since installing 64bit vista ultimate, my hard drive has been going nuts! and its driving me crazy, bearing in mind its a raptor and so its LOUD!

And im getting serious lag in games! Grid is running at 2fps! and after a while decides to stop responding and close itself.

What can be wrong? or have i done something/ not done something to cause this.

No idea! as its amazing that your getting anything with just a copy of vista, grid & a harddrive.

thought my spec was in my sig sorry lol obv not ay

Q6600 @ 3.5
2GB
8800Ultra SLI

182 drivers.

Is the hard drive supposed to constantly thrash itself?

And crysis, well it doesnt want to know!

It really annoying me now as i bought far cry 2 today and want to play!

Tried removing your overclock? You say you've moved to 64-bit Vista, so if you've come from a 32-bit O/S you need to know that 32-bit stable doesn't necessarily mean 64-bit stable. Check event viewer in administrator tools, see what's coming up in there too.

That a massively overclocked CPU may well be fine for 32-bit apps, but isn't so stable when it comes to 64-bit code. Other people have come across this aswell, so that's 'what on earth I'm talking about'.

I'd say that 2Gig isn't enough. Could the HDD be using itself as a bus, instead of Ram?

2GB isnt enough? not the reason why im getting 2fps in grid is it lol on startup then my ram usage is just under 700mb and during normal usage then hovers around one gig.

What do you mean the hdd using itself as a bus?

If you've only just installed vista, it could still be indexing the drive.

Yea ive now turned indexing off, and the drive has calmed down but hasnt affected the performance in games.

Just downloading service pack one now...well trying router keeps kicking out when i get to like 15%:mad::mad::mad:

What I meant to say is, that when you are low on RAM (And for me 64bit Vista alone uses up almost 1.5gigs) then the system will begin to use your hard drive as a kind of "virtual memory" or Page File, allowing you to have more Headroom for usage. However, this is extremely slow method as it will never be as quick to access as your RAM.

;)

Perhaps, not on its own anyway, Its probably a number of factors.

Even gaming it doesn't reach 2GB though

Disabling SLI seems to help in GRID, and a little in Crysis but that might be because i am at enthusiast settings all out on 8800 ultra.

Does vista not like SLI because when i boot up XP from my other hard drive then everything plays fine.

vista is indexing the drive may take 30mins - 1 hour to do. then defrag it :P

SLI work fine in Vista see my sig im using it!

well vista was crap without sp1 !!

Install SP1
Wait for indexing to finish or switch it off (Windows Search service)
Disable Windows Defender

overclock taken off, games still dont want to know! real stutterings and lag, but fine in vista.

How was gaming before SP1? as its still refusing to download, anyway i could torrent it?

Keep trying to download it from the microsoft website. If that still doesn't work google it. It's quite easy to get hold of.
