I'm having a debate with a few ppl on this one and thought i'd get everyones input.

Would you rather have higher res on your monitor 1920x1200, 2560x1440, 2560x1600 for greater detail, Or would you rather have 120Hz for fluid motion.

Let the poll begin..

Ideally you should try both and see which you prefer. Generally your preferences will be driven by the games you play and your sensitivity to responsiveness. I use the best of both worlds but prefer 120Hz when gaming without a doubt. I don't play anything particularly fast-paced (FPS titles like BF3 being the fastest I play currently) but I'm certainly too sensitive to responsiveness to properly enjoy using a 60Hz monitor, especially a 1440p number.

Higher res, so I choose 120Hz

Wut?!

I consider 3D to be higher res than any current or future 2D :) For that to be practical in PC gaming currently, it pretty much requires 120Hz, though this could change in future.

not so simple

120Hz vs. higher resolution if everything else equal? 120Hz, no doubt about it.

But if considering that at the moment the only 120Hz capable monitors are TN panels, which brings its own compromises: I'd rather take even 1920x1080 IPS 60Hz over 1920x1080 TN 120Hz.

CRT vs LCD:

CRT would win in pretty much all areas (except for their huge weight), but unfortunately they don't last forever and they don't make new ones anymore...

I was playing with 1024x768@160Hz on a 22" CRT only a year ago. But then it said it's too tired to continue, so had to let it go. (Though only changed to an older 19" CRT, which can only cope with 100Hz at 1024x768. Also, after 22", it feels too cramped, so now searching for a bigger monitor.)

Heat production is a huge disadvantage as well imo, I can remember the days where the "IT room" had 3 of those big (21.5"?) behemoths, makes for fun summers without air-conditioning. If you're coming from a CRT then a 120Hz screen is probably your best bet.
Still haven't seen a 120Hz screen, but I love my 2560x1440 IPS. I'll take IPS-glow over the horrible viewing angles/colour reproduction of a tn-panel any day.

120hz on a 1920x1080 res 22” monitor, with photo quality setting..:)

I only sit 2ft away from it.., thats my 60hz at the mo, going to go 120hz tho..

.

I enjoyed playing single player games on 2560 x 1600 that my gpu could handle because games looked so great. But for multiplayer FPS games i felt it was holding me back as i previously owned a 120hz before upgrading to higher res.

So i sold it and got a Asus VG278H.

Not really clear what you are comparing with i.e. what is the refresh rate associated with those resolutions.

If it is a straight 120hz vs 60hz comparison then I'd much rather have the former.
