Seriously seriously urgent

I'd test everything....hold on you've just bought all this, how can the gfx be on it's last legs ?

MW

The Graphics card was from my previous rig, ran fine in that.
Thinking it could have strongly been the PSU, but im still very concerned about the CPU, would the rig even turn on if the CPU had been blown? Because it boots fine just without a picture, everything runs cool, fans run at sensible speeds.. Still concerned.

System would power on and you'd get beeps like you would with faulty memory

It wouldn't boot if you had a faulty cpu, memory or gfx even a faulty psu can cause this as it would fail to POST (power on self test). When the computer is first turned on the bios does a basic system check to detect all the components are there and to a certain extent working.

wow remind me to be very carefull with my rig from now on, im always sticking my hands in there and fiddling with it, stick my hands in it, touching things and what not ;)

*Update*
The card wasn't the issue, as it runs perfectly fine in another computer, the Likely suspect Was the power supply, its the only thing i can see, giving of such smoke, or the CPU, but i figured there clever enough to stop entirely when they get hot.
I have sent of the Motherboard and the PSU for testing, am hoping i will get some sort of replacement or referral.

Mate back to basics here, pull all from your M/B cables, cards the lot just have M/B CPU with H/S & fan of course & PSU in NO Memory oh yea keep the power switch connected too...

power on and wait you should get beeps this will prove M/B is ready to POST as long as cpu & m/b are ok you will get the missing memory beeps if this is ok and you get the beebs then good news whack ya RAM in and try again..... this time it should beep differently to say there's no VGA......

If you get nothing try your spare PSU and wait results..... the guys are right PSU's tend to smoke more than anything else it's usually a capasitor that overheats leaks onto the PSU's PCB board and burns hence the smoke and that minging smell..... M/B's have capasitors too and they can do the same under shorts and extreme heat or over voltage so a visual check of the M/B will rule it out.... the good old sniff test is a good one to do on the PSU near the FAN let us know how you get on and goodluck

As for now the board and PSU got collected yesterday, as for the "sniffer" test as you so delightfully put it :D, a lot of the smell came from the Power supply, in a close second was the cpu mount, and thirdly the RAM. Just best to leave it until i get a reply from my supplier as to whether i will recieve replacements or not.
