I really dont get all the noise about these 2500K's - why would you want a chip without HT? Day-to-day basically makes the PC slow as ****... Ok you may get a few more FPS when in game but so what... by the time the map has loaded half the match is over!

And getting into windows takes FOREVER, almost physically painful. I hated and regretted every second i owned that aweful i5 750 - i should have bought the 760 with HT...

But that is last gen... So the option now is simular - cant have a 2500K because of no HT so the other option is a 2600K or 2700K but they are 250+ quid. Even the intel fanboys must concede that is pretty steap?!

So what is the final option.... AMD. CPU, Mobo & Ram for the price of a sandybridge - BF3 on full ultra with 2xAA gets 70+ FPS and crysis never drops below the v-sync. How is that not bang for buck?

I appriciate people use PC's for different things but i just couldnt bring myself to spend my hard earnt cash on something i be ultimately dissapointed with...

Ok, just saying, flame away.... :)

I'm glad you're happy with your AMD set up. The rest of the post is absolute drivel though

bit of a random post I must agree, loading Windows on most processors isn't that bad, even relatively slow ones since its more hard disk dependant to be honest. disagree about the 2500K being a bad chip, there is almost nothing not to like about them except the stupid code-name Intel gave the architecture, Sandy Bridge just sounds like weak sauce! but they are fantastic processors, granted the six core Phenom II are good bang for buck chips as well, got one for ~£80 and have never considered purchasing a 2500K instead.

also in day to day computing, which is for most people web browsing and the likes is perfectly fine on a dual-core never mind a quad-core, so getting that 2500K to run terrible in that sort of activity must be a rare skill.

seems a strange argument to say you would not buy a 2500k becuase it doesnt have HT so its better to buy a slower processor that also does not have HT.

Cool story. That at 800x600? Don't get me wrong, I run an AMD chip and Crossfire 5850s and that just isn't possible at 1920x1080 for the price of a 2500k alone

both i5 750 and i5 760 are 4 core 4 thread cpus!

I think you were misinformed since the "last gen" :D

the previous generation of i5 with Hyper Threading were dual-core, so there would be no incentive to purchase one over a proper quad-core part since Hyper Threading never scales that effectively, having another core is always the better option, so I think he is drunk or something along those lines! :D

I think you need to get out more.

You seem to be confusing non-HT vs HT with the effect of using a mechanical HDD vs an SSD (or simply not setting up your software correctly).

If you have a fast quad core like a i5 750 or 2500K then the cpu will not be the route cause of these issues.

the i5 2500k can do more per clock cycle than older non HT processors. even the i3 2100 is more than enough for day to day processes because day to day stuff uses so little processing power. plus the fact that the majority of every day programs dont benefit from HT makes your argument invalid.

remember, HT != another core. a program has to be designed to use a core and hyperthreading for that core

getting into windows is not processor limited, it is hard drive limited. this is why SSDs are so popular right now because their amazing read speeds allow for the entire OS to be loaded in 10-20 seconds

as ive said, theres no reason not to get the 2500k. £250 for the 2600k is about the right price, and roughly what its predecessor cost when it was the same age as the 2600k

your options are the following (sticking to the high end)
1. phenom II X4 955BE vs i3 2100: the i3 2100 will walk all over the phenom except in a few specialist areas such as video encoding

2. overclocked phenom II X4 955BE + custom cooler vs i3 2120. same result as above

3. phenom II X6 vs bulldozer 8150 vs i5 2500k. the 2500k murders all of the AMD competition in pretty much every area, despite the 8150 being far more expensive

put this together with PCIe gen3 support on intels motherboards and AMD really isnt the best option right now
I appriciate people use PC's for different things but i just couldnt bring myself to spend my hard earnt cash on something i be ultimately dissapointed with...
yes, i can see why you wouldnt want to buy an AMD processor now ;)

So this processor I've never used that everyone thinks is the bees knees must be slow as ****. I haven't tried it, but wth man, Come on! No HT? Dammit Intel we talked about this!
So I'll go buy a cheap AMD processor which also doesn't have HT either but I'm sure is magically faster... Just because.
