Hi

Server 2008 with about 5GB of space used on a 2TB drive.

I have a 3TB exernal connected for backups but when I try and run a windows backup I get this error

The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎01‎-‎10T21:08:07.569506700Z' has failed with following error code '2155348010' (One of the backup files could not be created.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Any ideas why it's doing this?

If the 3TB drive uses 4Kb sectors (Advanced Sector Size), then I think that will be the problem - those drives don't work on Windows 2008 from my experience. Try a different usb drive without the 4kb sectors.

+1 on 4kb sectors being the possible issue.

There's a MS blog with a rough list of (informally) tested drives here. Subject is full of gotchas - for instance it seems the 2TB WD Touro 2.5" USB works if it's the USB 2.0 version but not the USB 3.0 version.
