Every time I try to create a Network FileShare I get the error shown in the picture below Couldn't find anything online and I'm just completely stuck trying to figure out why.

Would appreciate any assistance in this matter.

I'm assuming NFS, as that's the only thing which would give SERVER:/SHARE... On my box, it seems to go through fine though.

Can you give us any more info?

Happens with both NFS and SMB shares.

For SMB shares

What other information would be helpful?

I also tried with a fresh install of Server 2012 but it had the same issue. I've enabled Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing in Advanced Sharing settings (for private and public networks). I have also temporally disabled the Windows Firewall for troubleshooting and still the same results.

Does it work if you share the directory through explorer instead? I.e. create the directory, right click, properties, sharing...

Surely to god its a DNS issue?

Replace the hostname with "localhost" and does it still resolve?

Are you even allowed dashes in the hostname?

That would be my guess aswell.

Yes you can have dashes in host names. As for the problem.. i have no idea, i've just tested a fresh install and it worked fine, I did nothing except install server 2012 datacenter, attach a data drive, create folder and share it.

Umm very strange, I installed Server 2012 standard rather than datacentre and it worked fine without any issues.

There must be some default settings in datacentre edition stopping this.

The only thing that differentiates standard from datacentre is the licensing.

Server 2012 has some annoying firewall defaults. e.g. NetBIOS name and Echo are disabled. Firewall could be a good shout.
