Server / backup solution

As the title says I'd like to build myself a media / backup server

Dont really want to spend too much, ideally quite under £300 if possible.

Not really sure where to go about this at all, basically I've got a lot of media I've ripped to my PC so I can stream to my xbox downstairs. I'd like to ideally store all of my data on a low powered server as well as use it to backup my main system.

Literally have no idea where to start so any help on a cheapo build would be brilliant or wither or not to buy something pre-built, was looking at the synology and it looks pretty sweet but i'm not sure if would suit my needs just as well
