Well 3 options really, 2 listed plus number 3
- Man up and tell her its going in the lounge/a bedroom

nah just kidding ;)

I would go garage personally, as stated lofts tend to be hottttt or cooooold and dampish

At least in the garage you can fairly easily get to it. A server is going to generate some heat, so in the winter I would think you can keep the damp off by its own heat, maybe add a thermostat to the fans if you havent got one already and keep airflow low when its not hot

Brilliant cheers all I was swaying towards the garage as best option but thought best to ask, I'm gonna start running CAT6 cable this weekend so I can start boarding bedrooms, I don't have a cabinet just yet so I'll spec one to suit the garage ie filters thermostat etc I've also not got the phone line reconnected yet as it was dropped from the original house to build the extension, the plan being to bring it in on the same wall as the cabinet and have the new master socket in or near the server.

I've got my master socket inside my cabinet in our utility room, really handy as you can just patch it through to any floor port in the house if needed. Well worth putting it either in or right next to the cab if you can.

That's the plan a friend works for BT/Openreach so it'll be a cheeky weekend hobble.

I've got WiFi access points in my loft, half way between the ceilings of the rooms below and the tiles and I monitor the temps. In the summer in can hit 50 degrees so not somewhere I would want to put more kit that can get quite hot anyway.

Out of interest for AP use I did measure temperatures directly above the ceiling plasterboard (so under loft insulation) and they were a lot better but for me having the APs in the loft is just temporary due to house renovation (including new ceilings) and once done they'll be fitted in the rooms below.
