could do with some help here.

CPU for a poweredge 840.

Upgrade options are an Intel X3230 2.66GHz / 2x4MB 1066FSB

or a

Dual Core Xeon 3070, 2.66GHz / 2MB 1066FSB processor

Both are priced the same. Surely the Quad is better?

Also, I dont want to pay stupid Dell prices but have only found a Xeon X3220 2.4GHz (1066MHz).

I take it that this would be ok.

Sorry my mistake. I was thinking of the X3210.

Have you priced the Q6700 to compare it to its X3230 brother?

Ah. That's quite a difference. The Xeons are usually a tad more expensive than their desktop brothers.

Assuming the Dell motherboard bios isnt designed to reject the desktop processors. You should be able to find the Xeons at a reasonable price though. The Quad is only better if your cpu load is heavy. If the cpu's struggling the get the quad. Otherwise the dual will be fine.
