Server down....help!

Our server is working, however no one can connect to it...the XP machines on the network give this message when trying to view one of the mapped server drives:

An error occured while reconnecting to z:\\newserver\c

Microsoft windows network: Not enough server storage is available to process this command

This connection has not been restored

Help!

I have no idea what this means, the server has plenty of "space" both in memory and storage - could this be related to the windows updates that came in yesterday??

Network administrator.....I'm the MD if that helps!

We are a small company, we dont have an IT department. The "server" is XP based, its going to go over to SBS2008 later this year but at the moment its all we have!

Server has been rebooted 4-5 times now to try and make it play nicely!

Tried the regedit above and no difference.

Sorted!

We added some new backup software last night, having just un-installed it and rebooted all is well again.

Why cant people make software that doesnt shaft systems all the time!

It is legit, but it is also free.

We run XP as a server as like many small businesses there is no "need" for server software, XP works fine, it holds data, runs programs and thats it, small number of users, low load and low cost.

We did at one point try Acronis - we paid for it and it screwed up all sorts of things, total nightmare especially as you have to contact their support line for their "removal tool" to properly clean up the mess it makes.

All machines are back working except 1 of the win98 machines, not sure why though!

We dont have any choice though, there are 2 win98 machines which serve dedicated purposes with no other alternatives for OS, its a pain but we are stuck!

I dont get why 1 machine has recovered ok and the other hasnt, yet all the XP machines work fine.

We have several sets of spares for the machines from ones we have manages to convert over to XP, i also have the licenses and disks for 98 to install on new machines if needed!

We wholly intend on installing SBS2008 on the server, all machines onto XP for users but currently we have to wait until our bespoke internal systems are converted over from dos based and re-written as part of the modernisation.

How would we go about virtualising?

Please do yourself a favour buy an actual server instead of putting SBS on that desktop you call server. This whole "it's good enough, it works, its cheap, we're only a small company, blah blah blah" attitude is the reason you were in a panic on the forums earlier. Buy a little piece of mind, it isn't that expensive.

Our "so called server" was built as a server, its also better than most cheap branded servers both on power and redundancy so i dont feel inclined to change it any time soon as we will lose power and money gaining nothing!

Not really ignoreance, i know a dam site more about my business and its needs than anyone on here. XP works fine, however the hardware is much better than most basic servers, add a server OS as we will be later this year and voila....its a server!
