Hi All,

I am not sure if this belongs in here or the storage pages but here goes.

If I am not going to be raiding a drive but it is going to be taking a heavy hit with multiple people accessing multiple SQL databases which drive is better (read fastest and most reliable...and if neither what would you go for)?.

WD 2TB Caviar Black or WD 2TB RE4-GP?

In an ideal world this would be in raid however I can’t fit more than one disk in the box...I’ve inherited an awful setup. It gets backed up to tape which is something I guess.

Thanks for any advice.

I'd take the best of both worlds, get a WD 2TB RE4! The black will be a good drive but the RE4s are true 24/7 drives. Don't bother with Green drives when it comes to fast.

Thanks for the quick response.

Yeah reliability is what I am looking for here. In the past its just been desktop hdds shoved in and then wondering why they fail.

Cheers.

Yeah normal desktop drives won't like use like that at all! Enterprise all the way.

Take a look at the Seagate Constellation drives as well if you can't get the WDs.

We have used Seagate ES.2s in our 20 TB raid 6 NAS boxes but cant really say they are great. Are the Constellations much of an improvement on these? Or did we just get a bad batch?

Also which would you rate higher the RE4 or the Constellation?

Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

No worries mate.

I work at a managed hosting company and we've used loads of ES.2s, Constellation and Constellation ES.2s (the newest ones) and they've all been great. The RE4s are just as good to be fair, they all perform very well.

The newest Constellations and RE4s are also faster than the older ES.2s. Cache has increased as well, always a bonus. Either drive would serve you well!
