Hi

I have been trying to setup my first ever server so I can just mess around with it and practice on it.

I installed server 2003 and then installed active directory which installed DNS as well.

I added a user & computer in Active directory.

I then tried to get my Vista laptop to join the domain and got the following error

dnserror.jpg

My setup is that the server & my laptop are both connected to be ADSL router.

What does the above error mean as my server knowledge stopped soon after installation

Thanks

It's using my ISp DNS settings. I can change the DNS to the IP of the server but how do I make the DC point to itself?

What does DC mean anyway? :o

Should the DNS on my laptop then be set to 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.5 which is the IP of he server?

Thanks for the help :)

Set primary DNS as the IP of the server on the laptop. 127.0.0.1 address points a machine to itself :)

The name resolution of the ADSL Router won't resolve the Domain Name.
You need to use the Domain Controlle for DHCP and in the scope set the DNS Server as the new Server. Turn DHCP off the LAN on the ADSL Router.

Put a forwarder on the DNS Server to point at the ADSL Router.

This way the PC will look at the local server to resolve the name, and if that can't resolve then will forward onto the Internet to resolve.

Thanks for all the advice.

I managed to setup the DNS forwarder as well :)

I can add an pc running XP to the domain but I only get the error trying to add my Vista laptop

What version of Vista are you running? (only Business, Ultimate and Enterprise can join a Domain).
Also Flush the DNS Cache on your Vista Laptop (Start CMD as ADMIN, run IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS)
Can you Ping the DC from the VISTA Laptop?
