Server Noob Here

I really don't understand what the benefits of having a server in your home so could someone explain this to me please?

I have a old system which has no use so I want to turn it in a server if it will benefit me. would this be capable server specs below?

okay thanks! is a NAS a server? I know that I could benefit from that me because I love streaming content from my laptop.
