I'm considering upgrading my home server. At the moment I'm using an old socket 775 desktop motherboard that doesn't allow me to use some features of ESXI that I need.

I can get 32gb of DDR3 and an Intel Xeon E3-1230 V3 fairly cheap, but I can't decide on a motherboard.

The Asus P9D-E/4L looks about right but is very tricky to get hold of.

I need it to support all the features of ESXI, including the ability to do RDM (my current server won't allow this).

What are the best options? Is it worth looking at what Supermicro or similar has to offer?

Nope, I've no idea what's out there really. I understand desktop stuff, and I understand this server stuff well enough that I want that CPU and lots of RAM.

I think I want one of the boards with 4 Ethernet ports, all I know for sure is that it must be able to do everything ESXI can do.

How do I choose between manufacturers for this stuff? Desktop stuff is easy because reviewers are falling over each other to advise, but I can't find anything useful for server/workstation stuff. :(

I'm gonna come clean and say I haven't a clue what any of that post means. xD (Well, the bit aobut a -F option and IP management).

I'm still very new to all this server/ESXi stuff really...
