Can someone recommend me a server, its basically going to be a file server, needs around 500Gb or RAID storage with a reasonable spec to last for a while

Would prefer HP

Well they need to be in HP caddies, even if you find the caddies on their own, HP wont support using non HP drives...

We got a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with 6 750GB drives. But its customisable like you say so you could go with something like that with any drive combo you wanted.

Right, this is getting silly now.

On the Dell site looking at different servers, select a PowerEdge R410, choose the hot plug chassis, choose a hot plug raid controller and choose hot plug disks but it still tells me I need hot plug disks or chassis

Is it not possible to have that server in a hot plug config even though they offer the chassis option

Take a look at the Hp Proliant DL380 range, they are a very good bit of kit in my opinion.

Nice and simple to setup and maintain, plus plenty of room for disk etc.

The Dell R410 can be had with hot plug drive. My Lotus Sametime server is running on a newly built R410, with 4 x 160Gb Hot Plug sata drives. for the raid connectivity section you need to specify from C7 upwards, for the hot swap chassis.

And the dell website is pants. Get an account manager, let them do the work.

Yes a 10k server is a trifle overkill

We ended up buying a DL360G5 in the end as we got a decent deal on it from one of our suppliers and it was available for Saturday delivery, I had a great bank holiday weekend!

The server is a little overkill for what it does at the moment but we can move stuff to it if we need to now
