I have just recently build a new gaming rig for my self and my original computer is now sitting in the corner of my room, i want to use this computer still and put it to some use.

I have recieved a free copy of the new windows server 2008 which i want to try out to see whats so special about it. Only problem is no graphics card! I could borrow a card just for the install and setup, my idea is that i dont include a graphics card and just access the server from remote access. Can this be done? only thing i can think of is the logging in bit like you cant be in a remote session when logged off can you? or when the server is off and you want to log in, coulod you do this from a remote access session?

you'd use remote desktop connection

which is built into to windows. When you connect via this you can log in. If the server is off you'll have to pres the on button and wait for windows to boot before you can log in.

Also you can log in as "console" in rdp which is the actual connection and not a terminal services connection.

Google is your firend.

Can you not just get a really old/cheap card? It'll be easier for when Windows breaks. Which it probably will :)

Will a 'regular' PC even get past bios POST checks without a graphics card.. or even start POST. Pretty sure my system just goes beep beeeep beep or something like that without having at least a basic PCI graphics card installed.

Yeah, sorry just reread the original.

You'll need some graphics definitely.

If you dont have on-board graphics im afraid you will need a cheep card just to get past POST, but once thats done, you can certainly rdc it with either the windows client or RealVNC. I actually use both depending on what im doing (one is faster, the other lets me do more to the system).
