Hey everyone, was wondering if anyone had any experiance putting a full 16x graphics card into a 4x or even a 1x slot, and what sort of performance penalty i could expect.

more specifically ive been given a server if i want it, which only has a 4x PCI-E slot for graphics, or a PCI or PCI-X (NOT PCI-E).

The slot has a closed end though, i was wondering if i kind of  sliced it open so i could slide a card in if it would work.

not looking for a killer rig, just it would beat my current rig and i could slide a 7600GT in or something

lol, i very much doubt it im afraid - VERY VERY much doubt it - wanted to do soemthing like that youd really need a workstation motherboard from asus or something - and those are like £300 for the good ones that your looking for

never say never however.. lol

I would be very interested to know what the performace hit is. I have an x800xl in a asrock 775 dual vsta (pci-4 only) and I only get 1750 3dmark 06 points. The cpu is an e6300 @2.1ghz.

Maybe someone who has the option to limit their PCI-E bandwidth could do some benchies for us. Obviously the disparity is going to increase with card performance and resolution.

if someone wants to send me a PCI-E card to test to see if this cutting the slot thing works, id be happy to try.

hardly seems worth it with 512mb of pc2700 ECC.

Need to save for conroe, Arrrrrrrrrg

Your score is about right for that card, remember that 06 scores are not comparable with previous versions!

It has been shown in reviews that the PCI-E of the 775Dual-VSTA has relatively little effect, since it has similar bandwidth to AGP 8X which itself is barely used even by top end cards.
