so I bought a 3yr old car a few months ago.

It had 9600 miles on the clock and had already had 2 services.

The 3rd year date is now upon us, and we’ve just hit 10k. Would you think we need a service this year (considering it’s already had 2 before 10k)

Or wait til next year?

Did you buy it from a main dealer with warranty cover, If yes I believe (I'm sure someone will tell me I'm wrong if I am) you have to get the servicing done when they state to keep your warranty cover.

Do whatever the service schedule says it needs.

It all depends on the car and what the manufacturer recommends. It also depends if the car is still under manufacturer warranty and if you wish to maintain this as they will likely require you to have it serviced and cared for by them in the warranty period.

I'd imagine that unless it's on some kind of longlife service schedule (which would be incredibly stupid if the car is doing ~3000 miles a year), then the stipulation will be along the lines of 10,000 miles or annually (whichever happens soonest).

So, yes, it probably will need a service this year.

My S3 is going in at the start of October (1 year old), having only covered 3,900 miles.

I would've thought so. It's normally a case of a certain mileage or a certain amount of time, whatever comes first.

It may have done very little mileage but at the very least it should probably have an oil/oil filter change. There's also the matter of whether you have a warranty in place or if you're at all bothered about resale value in the future as although it's done little mileage, a missed service might be of issue to some. Sure, it won't exactly cause its value to plummet but having everything intact is always beneficial.
