In a desperate attempt to stop svchost.exe using up all of my cpu all the time, i tried setting the affinity of each occurence of svchost.exe to one cpu ..... and it doubled my fps in Clear Sky

Is there any way i can assign svchost.exe to one cpu on startup?

Cheers

I've been using Process Explorer for hours today. I've gone through each service which is assigned to the svchost, stopping it to see whether the cpu usage drops significantly.

I discovered that if i stopped the DCOM Server Process Launcher service, the cpu usage drops to around 3%, but the RPC depends on this service. If i do the shutdown -a thing to prevent windows shutting down, I can still use the pc, but without sound :/

So then i went through all the services depending on thr RPC ....

OH THANK GOD! Ive just figured out what it is :D Hooorah!

I had a feeling it was something to do with the Windows Audio or Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service, neither of which i could stop .... So i just disabled the the onboard ATI HDMI Audio device and cpu usage is down to 3% :p

Nah, Vista64.

Now i can finally appreciate my 4870x2!

I loaded up Clear Sky earlier (after i got very bored with Far Cry 2) and i had 20fps - i looked at the settings and they were set to low  Then after changing the affinity of all the svchost's it went to 40fps

Now im running it at 1920x1200 and Max settings and im getting between 50-80fps :D

Sweeeeeeet!
