Hi all,

I just reactivated my Seti account, only crunching on my lappy atm as I work abroad a lot.

I have some parts I'd like to use and just build a dedicated rig, and not mess around too much with my main pc (sig) at home.

So I have the following lying in my cupboard at home (off the top of my head)

Mobo= Asus P6TD x58
CPU = i7 920 overclocked but can't remember what at :confused:, on Titan Fenrir cooler
Mem = Corsair xms3 6GB 1600mhz Tri-channel
GFX = AMD 5870
SSD = Crucial Real M4 256GB
HDD = 1TB can't remember which !
PSU = Enermax Galaxy 1000W

Do I need to change anything out?
I'm not like hardcore folder but would like to have reasonable output. My main concern is my 5870.

1. Will changing this make the most significant change to output? If so then would would you guys recommend?

2. Do I need to use the ssd or just use the 1TB hdd?

3. As for clean install of OS, shall I just use Win7 or try Linux (I've never used or tried it before) I would try it if its not to much hassle to setup and does it make any difference to output?

Let me know what you experts think, I have around 400-500 quid available to make any changes.

Afternoon Colin :)

Thats a nice rig you have sat in the cuboard :eek: You should be able to overclock to 4ghz without too much ado, while seti does use ati cards now it is still not as productive and cost effective as an nvidia card. There are lots of different projects that could utilise your ati card am sure someone will be along soon with more advice .... i am not upto scratch!
The psu could handle another gpu if you were to up your output which might prolong the life of your laptop :)

I don't really know much about SETI these days, but I don't think AMD cards are that great on it which is the main reason I stopped running it. Your 5870 is good for about 200k ppd on Milkyway depending on what you have it clocked at 985MHZ and giving about 215k ppd. AMD cards are also good for Collatz Conjecture, PrimeGrid and POEM I think.

@ Toxic...Yeah its a nice setup and wasted in the cupboard.

I was thinking x2 Nvidia 560Ti's I read a review from bit-tech (written) 2011 that they were very efficient.
Not sure which version though, there are 1Gb 2Gb and 448 versions ???

@Phil how does that output compare to say x2 560Ti ? Is there anywhere I can check online output comparisons?

Hi Colin :)

Given that they have announced some price cuts and the new gpus could land within a few weeks i think you would be best to hang fire on any new purchases as the allready lowered prices may just inch down a bit more, same advice i gave myself this morning "have waited this long a bit longer will not hurt". :)

Aye sounds like good advice, I'm not back from abroad for another 9 days so hopefully we'll have some movement on the whole Kelper release soon ;)
