SETI@Home complete

Holy ****, back before the Bitcoin greed kicked in and ppls did this purely for the epeen, fantastic times. I still remember discovering it in an article in PC Format magazine (kids, they're a bit like Tiktok feeds but on printed paper).

EDIT: ignore me, I'm getting confused with Folding@Home

I'll leave my stupidity for all to see, it's Friday after all and I've been way overdue a Nasher post.

I remember running this back on a old Windows XP machine thinking it was helping, taking a full week running 24/7 to complete a job :(

Does this mean we can turn the OcUK Stomp Monster off now?

Speaking of Folding@Home, I do remember my dad @BrianStuart running it on our family PC. Did anything come of that project?
I don't recall us ever using SETI@home, but doesn't mean we didn't use it.

Wait, isn't SETI a thing on home PC's anymore? It's been completed?

Damn, I was looking forward to setting back up on my new build later this year.

Ran both seti and folding back in the day. At one point I was sneaking seti onto any PC I got my hands on :D

Just looked it up. Yes.
Generated hundreds of peer reviewed studies
Advanced protein folding theory and molecular dynamics understanding
Introduced methods now the standard across computational biology
Played a real, documented role in Covid Research (more than 2 Exaflops of computational power!)
Demonstrated the viability of ‘citizen science’.

I looked up SETI as well. No Aliens found.

Folding was protein folding - yes there's lots on that, and even Deepmind ended up sorting out protein geometries at a later date.

I had it on the entire server farm at work, it saved the results locally and every week or so, I’d take the completed WUs and upload them to my account. I remember being accused of cheating during that time as I’d often parp a lot at once.

Seti@home got me into this forum as we were the number 1 UK based team in the late 90s when I got onto the internet at uni and did my small bit. I'm old...

I did SETI, best screensaver ever :D it predated all the modern stuff seems like, my name popped up on seti for years after just from the profile page.

I do wish I had a better clue from my SETI and PGP usage to be more bullish on BTC, I think they are all linked in development of massive segmented work over networks.

I might have done the folding at home one for a couple of years. It was definitely one about solving extremely complex math equations or something.
