SETI@home down time

Greetings everyone. I'm a returning member of the team.. I've been out of crunching for a few years but back now. I noticed SETI@Home was down for three days this week. I read on the project web site that happens weekly. Is that right? Seems a bit crazy to take everything offline for 3/7th of the time.

I added a pref to store 5 days of work on each cruncher (I assume that's the best way to handle this). Is that what everyone else does or is this an unusually long down time?

Thanks

Hello welcome back :)

The outage is not that bad if you set you cache up like you have. I haven't had any problems with it now since it has settled down first few times were a nightmare but it's fine now.

Good to be back!

I never remembered the old SETI servers being taken off line like that. Just kind of surprised me. Glad to know it's not a problem with a few days of work cached!

Hi Tom, good to see you here :D

The servers used to be switched off one day a week (on Tuesdays) for maintenance but they found that this wasn't enough time to sort everything out, hence the lengthier outage these days. A three-day outage isn't ideal, but if it helps them to solve any problems they might have then it can only be a good thing and it doesn't really affect anyone as long as their cache is set up to cover it.

Welcome back, Tom.:)
I saw your thread about getting a 460 so you might want to set the cache at 7 days to make sure your gpu does not run out of work.

The reason that SETI is offline for 3 days is that they are using the servers to process other scientific work, it is not all for maintenance.
Project is offline now due to the air conditioning failing, again.
