Hi all,

I need some of your expertise as i want to set up a website with all of my photos on (gallary style) but i want it to be either on my Server, On my current Nas drive or on my Netgear N600MAX router.

Only problem is i have no idea even where to start. What would you guys do? what software would you use? how would you set it up so people can access it via a webpage over the internet?

Thanks

First of all you'll need to get yourself a static IP address from your broadband provider. If you're on a residential service this may be impossible, so you may need to change provider. You'll also need a good connection. Given that you would be on the server end it's the upload side of things that's important here, so you'll need 2Mb upoad, minimum. And given you're going to be potentially serving a lot of imagery, you may need to up your bandwidth limits.

You'll then need a domain, which can be bought pretty cheaply. You then point the A records of the DNS for the domain to the static IP of your server.

You'll then need to install either Linux/Apache/MySQL or Windows Server/IIS/SQL on your server and install whatever gallery software you're going to be using. Don't forget to sort out your firewall and other security measures though, as your network may be completely open to the WWW if you're not careful.

If that hasn't put you off, then it should.

Wow, That sounds like a lot of issue's Firstly i cannot get an IP address from Virgin media so this won't work, I do actually have a Website already, Could i set that up but point it to local folders on my Server hard disk drive?

Not without doing the above, no.

I take it you're trying to avoid the hassle of having to upload everything? TBH, it'll take far less time and money to buy some hosting and dump your images on it than it will to buy and maintain everything you need to run a half decent webserver.
