Hi

I've burnt through my mobile data after tethering data in the past. Sometimes a software will do a big update and kill all the data. I have a windows 7 laptop, do windows 8+ and macs have software built in which smartly detect a hotspot and set a cap on downloads?

Are there any good windows 7 software which will manage these downloads when on a hotspot wifi?

Why don't you just turn auto update off and update when you know it's ok?

cos I will definately forget to enable/disable it 100% of the time.

Other things like podcast downloads are hard to do, e.g. you run your laptop and then just close the lid putting it to sleep, back you laptop and go off to the internet cafe, tghen you open your laptop, set the hotspot and then itunes is running in the background and downloads the podcasts killing all your data.

There is no way you're going to manage this manually.

Windows 8/8.1 has Metered Connections where you can assign a particular network connection as metered or not. That way, it won't do any updates unless you're on an 'unmetered' connection such as a wifi hotspot and not when tethered.
