Setting File Permisions

Hi all, Im about to go into student accomodation, and the internet we get is via use of a network, with the ability to share files with other users etc.

I was just wondering how I would go about blocking any access to my PC, I dont want anyone to be able to snoop around, see what files I have, Be able to take them etc, and by anyone i meen not students, and not system admins!

So how would i go about setting this up with windows? TY!

Right click "My Network Places" and select properties.

Right click on "Local Area Connection" or whichever connection your using at Uni and again select properties.

Uncheck "file and printer Sharing for microsoft networks".

Click Apply and OK.

Job done (just about) still a good idea to make sure all accounts on your laptop have strong passwords and especially the Admin and Owner accounts.

My computer will be locked in my room, with no one able to access it, I dont actualy use accounts on my PC as it slows down boot up by abotu 15 seconds, However if I follow the guide you have given me there, will it stop everyone including admins accessing my pc? Dont want them reading about my dreams, or conversation logs from msn or whatever

If this is your own PC, then yes the above steps are all you should need.

Setting a password on all accounts is important as they are not used to locally access your machine but can be used to remotely access it too. Having a blank or weak password (like 123456 or hello) makes it much easier for people to gain access.

Switching off the the file and print shring stops any folders on your machine being accessible via the network, however as far as reading your MSN logs then I cant say for certain as it is possible for them to sniff the network and pick up packets of info that your sending and receiving, however it is unlikely that they will go to those sort of lengths.

How would I set the password that stops people accessing my PC remotely? Sounds dumb but im not sure... and a password like E3feet788bagonyourhead17 would be secure no?
