Setting hard drive to slave..

I've got a really old computer downstairs that looks like it's on it's way out so I am trying to connect the hard drive from it to this PC and move some of the stuff the family wants to save on to my PC until they purchase another one.

Thing is I'm having trouble setting the hard drive from the other computer to slave. The hard drive in my computer is hooked up via SATA, and the one I am trying to put in is via IDE. Originally I kind of rushed what I was doing and noticed I'd put the master part of the cable in to the hard drive. I thought simply switching it with the slave part of the cable would solve my problem but no, even when the slave part of the cable plugged in the hard drive is still set to master.

Can anyone help me out? thanks.

If the IDE drive you are connecting is the only device on the cable then it should be set as master. The fact that there is a SATA drive in the machine is irrelevant, the master and slave settings are only there to determine how two IDE devices on the same cable interact.
